Many cultures have stories about giant scary creatures. In many ancient manuscripts, these creatures are depicted to be like humans but with enormous body sizes that can do strange things. Some people wonder if these stories are true. They think those creatures were possibly real and some people could have seen them. There have been stories from different places about giant humanoids walking around.
There are accounts of soldiers who claimed to have encountered high strangeness in Afghanistan while serving in the military. Nick Orton is the author of the book entitled “Tales from the Grid Square,” in which he shared a collection of 230+ accounts of the paranormal from the eyes of soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines. He writes about various things, from terrifying warzones to unsettling experiences in garrison, to UFOs, cryptids, ghosts, and more.
“During the war, many members of the US Military and Coalition would encounter activity that would defy normality,” Orton wrote on Havok Journal. “UFOs, cryptids, and ghosts. Many bore witness to the immense and immeasurable mystery of Afghanistan. What they witnessed is often kept close to the heart, be it terrifying or truly something incredible.”
In the 1980s, many people were anxious about the possibility of a big war involving nuclear weapons. This was because of such events as the Iran-Iraq war and the Soviet Union taking control of Afghanistan. People felt like the end of the world might happen soon. During this time, there were stories about a huge person living in a faraway place called Kandahar.
A man named Stephen Quayle talked about this story on a popular American radio show “Coast to Coast” in 2002. He had been studying ancient civilizations, giant mythical creatures, UFOs, and biological warfare for a long time. According to Quayle, the US government kept this story secret for many years.
It all started when some American soldiers went missing during a mission in Afghanistan. They tried calling them on the radio but got no response. So, a Special Operations Task Force was sent to find the missing soldiers. They thought maybe the missing soldiers had been captured or killed. When they got to the place where the missing soldiers were supposed to be, they found a big cave. Outside the cave, they found the missing soldiers’ belongings, like their weapons and equipment.
This story gained widespread recognition in 2016 after YouTuber L.A. Marzulli shared now a deleted lengthy interview with military personnel known as “Mr. K,” who claimed to be one of the eyewitnesses of the incident. Marzulli shared his version that the giant was a Nephilim, one of the creatures described in the Bible, the Book of Genesis, as offsprings of angels and human women who inhabited Canaan at the time of the Israelite conquest.
During the interview, Mr. K stated that he had witnessed the killing of a giant and strange creature, which he referred to as the Kandahar Giant. He claimed the giant was shot, but did not provide any details on the location of the alleged incident, other than to say it was a “remote” location in Afghanistan in 2002. He noted he and others were sent in to look for a missing patrol when they saw a scarlet-haired giant emerge from a cave and skewer his friend, whom he called “Dan,” with a large blade.
According to Mr. K, the Kandahar Giant was 13 feet tall, had red hair that looked like fire, six fingers on each hand, and two sets of teeth. It wore leather shoes and smelled bad, like dead bodies. It suddenly came out of a cave and stabbed one of the soldiers with a spear. Then, the soldiers started shooting at it until it fell. They used powerful guns like M4 carbines, recon carbines, and M107 Barrett rifles. Those guns could cause a lot of damage even in a short time.
After the soldiers defeated the giant, they put it onto a big helicopter called a Chinook. The helicopter took it to a plane for moving things. After that, nobody knew where it went. The soldiers were forced to sign non-disclosure agreements so that the government could keep them all quiet. But in the end, the soldiers decided to speak up because, as one of them said later, “everyone deserves to know what really happened.”
The conception of the Nephilims was the first ordeal humans had to face, as there was no way to overcome the needs of those supersized humanoids. Intervening into the natural order of things had infuriated The Creator, so “The Watchers” and all that had been corrupted were about to taste retribution.
The word Nephilim is found in the Bible two times, the first is in Genesis 6:1-6, and then again in Numbers 13:33. Scholars and commentators translate the word Nephilim as giants or fallen ones. In The Book of Enoch, there is a mention of 200 fallen angels known as the Watchers, led by an individual named Semyaza, who descended upon Mount Hermon (a mountain cluster that exists between Syria and Lebanon), where they swore an oath to father lineages with human women. Later, with the union of these angles and human women, great giants were born. Hebrew texts refer to the powerful beings born to the Watchers as the Nephilims.
The controversial “Book of Enoch” describes wicked angels who became fond of mortal women and mated with them, giving birth to the hybrid race of giant humanoids known throughout secular and Biblical history as the Nephilim.

“And it came to pass when the children of men had multiplied that in those days were born unto them beautiful and comely daughters. And the angels, the children of the heaven, saw and lusted after them, and said to one another: ‘Come, let us choose us wives from among the children of men and beget us children.’ And Semjâzâ, who was their leader, said unto them: ‘I fear ye will not indeed agree to do this deed, and I alone shall have to pay the penalty of a great sin.’ And they all answered him and said: ‘Let us all swear an oath, and all bind ourselves by mutual imprecations not to abandon this plan but to do this thing.’ Then swore they all together and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it.” [Book of Enoch, Chapter 6]
Is it real?
In August 2016, Snopes, an online fact-checking website asked the US Department of Defense about the “Kandahar Giant incident.” In response, the DOD replied they had no information about a special forces member killed by a giant in Kandahar.
Besides, there are no news releases on the Department of Defense’s website about a special forces troop disappearing in Afghanistan or any incident involving soldiers defeating a giant. However, just because there is no evidence, it does not mean the Kandahar Giant myth is not believed. Some people in cryptid communities think the government is hiding the truth about it.
At around the same time, the Snopes article said the story was not true, L.A. Marzulli told several right-wing websites that the United States government was covering up this “spectacular” story. He said the people in charge want to keep the truth from the Bible hidden.
He claimed, “People have a right to know about this incident. If there are fifteen or eighteen footers roaming the Earth and our military has brought them down, we have a right as American citizens to know about it…“I mean, this isn’t classified military stuff. This is something we need to know. And it points back to the Biblical prophetic narrative.”
Interestingly, the person named Dan, who died in Kandahar around the time of this supposed event in 2002, was Sergeant 1st Class Daniel A. Romero. He died in a bomb explosion with three other soldiers.
Despite strong evidence against it, the story of the Kandahar Giant is still believed by some soldiers who were in Kandahar in 2002. Many veterans who served in that area say they were told to aim their guns high, towards the head, “and a bit higher” after that incident.
“Is it true?” Sure, ask Snopes, I’m sure they know exactly what is true and what is false about the world! Thanks, Snopes!
